Point of View This story is written in third person omniscient point of view. It allows the readers to see everything going on in the story from a narrative point of view, also making it easier to follow the story and which characters are talking and how they feel. Setting This story takes place on an island where a plane has crashed during World War 2. The plane was full of school boys and the pilot died in the crash. They are left to fend for them selves and try and create a mini civilization until rescue. Where the writer made the setting of the story makes it more dangerous and keeps the “on the edge” feeling throughout reading the novel. Notes The book starts out very light atmosphere with the whole tropical scenery and “adult free” feeling to the boys, although throughout the novel it gets more intense and gives a savage/evil feeling. Theme This book reflects a lot on what lengths people will go to for power and leadership and that creating a civilization is competitive, savage and unfair.
