The Value of Death Kennedy Jasken

In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding there were two deaths. One death was Piggy and the other was Simon. Both Piggy and Simon never deserved their deaths, while in Piggy's death he was stoned, in Simon's death he was speared. Their deaths were both tragedies of the novel. Although Piggy did a lot and helped the group out and also found out most of the boys names, he couldn't do anything to make the boys like him. Simon talked to the pigs head skewered on the wooden stick and the hunters thought he was the beast coming out of the bushes when they speared him. Though Simon nor Piggy could have prevented their deaths, they were the biggest tragedies in the story and Piggy had the worst because it was slow, painful and he also knew who was beating on him.
Death, is it something to be scared of or something to expect? Was getting picked on, making a friend and choosing to be on someones side the worst thing Piggy could have done to deserve death? Piggy died for the following reasons; he was over weight, on Ralph's side, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and he disobeyed Jacks orders. For those reasons he was stoned and it was the worst death in the story.
Does getting speared just because a group of boys thought you were a monster, make it right to kill someone? Simon's death could have been prevented but, the boys were too frightened to open their eyes to see that Simon wasn't a monster and that there wasn't a monster on the island.
What would be the worst death, being murdered or being speared by accident? I feel that both deaths are tragic but, the worst death would be getting stoned. I feel that Piggy's death was the worst because you are feeling the pain of something smashing against your head. You also have time to think about whats happening and you know that you're going to die. I feel that Piggy's didn't deserve his death, just because he didn't want to be on Jacks side and that he wanted to be on Ralph's. In my opinion Piggy had the worst death and that it was more terrible. Although Simon's death was bad, at least it was instantaneous.

Oh the horro, the horror

The Horror, The Horror
In the saying “ Oh the horror, the horror” said Kurtz in the book Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad; he said this as he was dying, why i think he said this is because he looked back on what he did and what was done and realized that it wasn't as good or as bright idea as he thought. This relates to the book Lord of the Flies because all the boys have done the wrong things and they killed their own, how they have made the wrong decisions and at the end they realized how bad it was and how much more worse it got then what it should have been.

lor of the flies choice project

Choice Project

Song # 1- Angel by Sarah McLoachlan
I chose this song because it's a sad song and it connects to the scenes where Piggy and Simon die. Of how the boys must of felt and how sad they must have been.

Song # 2- Resolve by Nathan Lanier
I chose this song because it ties in with the hunting and competition scenes, how they are in the zone of hunting and how competitive the boys are.

Song # 3- Ordinary Day by Great Big Sea
I chose this song because it's a happy song and it's full of joy, it's just like when the boys killed the pig and they were all happy and excited about it. This song ties in to when the boys are all happy and having a good time.

quarter #4

In Lord of the Flies the boys have split into two groups with the majority on Jacks side. Ralph and two other boys struggle to keep the fire going when since Jack and his group steal Piggy's glasses in the middle of the night. Ralph and Piggy make their way to the rock to talk to Jack about the issue with the signal fire and the theft of Piggy's glasses. At this point Roger pushes a big boulder that hits Piggy and knocks him off the cliff to his death. Jack then has a huge fit and shoots his spear at Ralph with his group following him. Ralph gets informed that Jack and his group are planning to capture and or kill him. Ralph decides he should hide to keep himself safe. Jack and his group set the island on fire in search of Ralph.

Characters

Ralph - Protagonist, dynamic character, leader of the boys.

Jack - Antagonist, leader of the other tribe, dynamic character.

Roger - Murderer of Piggy, Jack's right-hand man.

Point of View
The point of view is in third person. The characters feelings and thoughts are expressed in the book which allows the reader to experience the boy’s actions.

Writing style
The book is challenging to read because he uses a wide variety of words. The words he uses in the dialogue express the boys’ identity. The story is also very descriptive. The story was easier to follow in the second half of the story.

Theme
The theme in this novel is darkness of humanity. Because the boys become more and more savage further on in the book. Like in the book when Roger kills piggy with a stone.

-Jack was chosen as the hunter leader
- They created a fire on a hill on the top of a hill
- They finally killed their first pig
- Jack and Ralph have arguments on who's more important

Character intro:
Ralph: he is the protagonist in the story, he is 12 years old and is the leader of the boys.
Jack: he is the antagonist in the story, he has red hair and is very rude. He also speaks his mind.
Piggy: he is the supporter of the protagonist, he is very shy and sensitive. He also tries to get every one to be on Ralph's side.

Setting:
The story is about these boys who get deserted on a tropical island with no food or water, there's no adults around and they are all trying to stay alive until they get rescued.

Point of view:
the story is written in third person. I think the author wrote the story like this to show more of the feeling and acting in the story.

The Writers Style:
I find he writes the story in a realistic way, that he has been through an experience similar to the situation in the book.

Theme:
the theme of the story is helping others, because in the book your better off working with others to survive then if you were to work by yourself and survive less.
