Synopsis outlining major events/character development
-They continue to search for the beast.
-Enraged, Jack storms away from the group, saying that he is leaving and that anyone who likes is welcome to join him.
-Simon sees the corpse of the parachutist, tell that to all boys in group.
-The boys think Simon was the beast, so they fall on him violently and kill him.
-Jack and Ralph divide into two different kind of part, Ralph and his small group, saying that Ralph’s group is a danger to the tribe.
-Jack attacks Ralph, and they fight. Roger and Jack begin to torture Sam and Eric, forcing them to submit to Jack’s authority and join his tribe.
-Ralph thinks about the deaths of Simon and Piggy and realizes that all vestiges of civilization have been stripped from the island.
-Jack wanted to catch Ralph. Finally, he was saved by a officer.
Characters introduction
Ralph - The novel’s protagonist. He is 12 years old, he always try to hold all boys together to build a build a miniature civilization on the island until they can be rescued. Ralph represents human beings’ civilizing instinct. He looks like a smart director in the boys’ team.
Jack - The novel’s antagonist, he is older than other boys. He is leader of the hunters. In the story he become more and more barbarization. He know how to control other boys and let them work for him. That’s the reason why he can catch a pig. He represents the instinct of savagery. He always ignore Ralph’s viewpoints, and he is so arrogant.
Simon - Simon represents a kind of natural goodness. He is a shy and sensitive boy in the group. Simon stands on an entirely different plane from all the other boys. Simon embodies a kind of innate, spiritual human goodness that is deeply connected with nature and, in its own way, as primal as Jack’s evil.
Piggy - Piggy represents the scientific, rational side of civilization. He is so smart, he make a makeshift sundial to use to tell time.
Point of view
Author uses third person in the novel, and uses a lot characters’ talking to describe their each psychology.
Setting
(part2 chapter 7~12) The setting is they are continue to search for the beast. Ralph and Jack divide into different part.
Notables about the writer’s style
The author uses symbol writing style in Lord of the Flies. He uses different characters’ emotional description to show us what is the symbol of all boys. Simple symbols can convey the novel’s central themes and ideas.
Statement of themes
In the second quarter of this book, the main theme is describing changes of the power, such as Ralph and Jack, although is not the biggest leader, his minds represent civilization power. Also on the contrary, Jack’s power represents savage and rude.
