Choice Assignment #1 ---Character sketches

Jack is described by the author as tall, thin, and bony. From the beginning of the novel, we know the hair under his black cap is red and he has light blue eyes that are seemingly frustrated. 

Jack is the leader of the hunting group, and also very opposed Ralph’s views on the current situation. His group is different from Ralph’s. He alway show us his rude and natural minds or activities. Jack is the novel’s antagonist. He always wants to against Ralph’s minds, and he wants to the highest leader of the boys group. But longs for total power and becomes increasingly wild, barbaric, and cruel as the novel progresses. At the end of the novel, Jack wants to hurt Ralph, but finally he failed. From Lord of the Flies, I think Jack was so important to be described. His minds and activities always can represent the desire for power  and show us so clearly what minds would be rude and savage. He has learned to use the boys’ fear of the beast to control their behavior, other ways to think about it, that is mean a reminder of how religion and superstition can be manipulated as instruments of power.

Ralph-In chapter one: the Sound of the Shell Ralph is described initially as the boy with fair hair. Later in the chapter a more detailed description of Ralph appears, and I quote.... He was old enough, twelve years and a few months, to have lost the prominent tummy of childhood; and yet not old enough for adolescence to have made him awkward. You could see now that he might make a boxer, as far as width and heaviness of shoulders went, but there was a mildness about his mouth and eyes that proclaimed no devil. 

The text makes it clear that Ralph is elected chief because he’s handsome – “attractive” and “fair,” as the text informs us. Ralph is the athletic, charismatic protagonist of Lord of the Flies. He has some innate abilities. Such as he is level-headed, he always deal trouble very well. In the novels he wanted to set up some culture and fair rules, but Jack never comply with his thoughts. At the beginning of story, Ralph had the most power to control boys. However, as the group gradually succumbs to savage instincts over the course of the novel, Ralph’s position declines precipitously while Jack’s rises. Ralph’s main wish is to be rescued and returned to the society of adults. But the end of the this book, he wept when he saw the naval officer. He realized the human capacity for evil.
