By Bryn Hobbis Quartering So far in the first quarter of the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Piggy found the conch and Ralph has become the “chief.” In the first 60 pages there have been a lot of characters introduced some of which are Simon, Piggy, Jack, Ralph, Sam and Eric. Simon is the lanky kid in the choir that passes out at the start of the book; he is quiet and likes to be by himself, but still helps the group with things like hunting. Piggy is the fat kid that gets picked on by about everyone in the book, the others don’t make fun of him just for his weight but his short temper and his constant complaining, even though he doesn’t help with much at all with hunting, getting food or making shelter. Jack is the main choir boy, he is controlling but still lets Ralph become Chief at the start of the book, but later questions Ralphs choices and gets jealous. Ralph is the protagonist, he is the leader of the group, and he’s witty and quick to make decisions. Although he still has some people that don’t agree with him. You also meet Sam and Eric but the book doesn’t go into too much detail about them. Except that they are twins making them flat characters so far. The theme of the start of the book has been order, control and exploration. As soon as all the boys get together they explore to see if they are even on an island. After they figure out they’re on an island and most likely going to be there for a long time, all the boys start scavenging and hunting for food. Although their hunting hasn’t been too helpful, they have decided to try to camouflage them selves’ with clay so they can catch the wild pigs. The book is written from a third person point of view, and so far the book has been good and I’m looking forward to the rest of it.
