By Bryn Hobbis October 22, 2012 Quartering#2 In this quarter of Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph sees a boat when he’s on the beach. A fire was burning but Jack let it die by the time the boat had past. This led to an argument between Jack and Ralph. Jacks obsession with killing pigs got in the way of feeding the fire. Ralph had told Jack about the importance of the fire but Jack only told two people to watch and keep the fire going, but two people wasn’t enough. Seeing as most of the other boys joined in on the hunt. Once Jack and the hunters came back, Ralph noticing that the fire had gone out gets angry at him and questions him. Piggy gets frustrated at Jack and starts yelling at him. Jack embarrassed by being yelled at by two people in front of everyone snaps and slaps piggy’s glasses off his face and breaks one of the lenses. Characters Simon is the lanky kid in the choir that passes out at the start of the book; he is quiet and likes to be by himself, but still helps the group with things like hunting. Piggy is the fat kid that gets picked on by about everyone in the book, the others don’t make fun of him just for his weight but his short temper and his constant complaining, even though he doesn’t help with much at all with hunting, getting food or making shelter. Jack is the main choir boy, he is controlling but still lets Ralph become Chief at the start of the book, but later questions Ralphs choices and gets jealous. Ralph is the protagonist, he is the leader of the group, and he’s witty and quick to make decisions. Although he still has some people that don’t agree with him. You also meet Sam and Eric but the book doesn’t go into too much detail about them. Except that they are twins making them flat characters so far. Theme The theme of the second quarter has been confusion and misunderstanding
