The horror

In the Heart of Darkness when Kurtz is about to die, he realizes he has nothing to be proud for and says “The horror, the horror!”, reflecting what evil things he has done in his life to get where he was. This relates to the novel I'm reading, Lord of the Flies because both novels theme are about how viscous and barbaric people can get when fighting for power or something they want. Jack and Kurtz relate a lot in a way because of how they both manipulated things and people to get what they wanted and rise to there success. At the end of Lord of the Flies Jack and his tribe are chasing after Ralph and trying to hunt him down. Once Ralph reaches the beach he falls to the ground, exhausted physically and emotionally. Before the boys reach him, Ralph looks up to see a Naval officer, seconds after the rest of the boys viciously burst through the jungle onto the beach; the naval officer is thrown off guard how such innocent boys had come to such brutal savagery in such a short time. The boys all break down into tears; realizing the dignity they had, the feel is now gone. This relates to Kurtz quotes before his death because when they are saved they look back on what happened, what they have become and are not proud.

Character sketches Ralph and Jack

Ralph Ralph, the protagonist, is a young twelve-year-old English boy; he’s got average with an average “athletic” structured body to go with it. He had fair blonde hair and he was described with being “Built like a boxer” and when the boys were voting for leader that… “There was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out; there was his size, and attractive appearance..." Throughout the first few chapters of the book it really shows why he is elected leader and what type of character he is. When he is being elected leader of the group he out votes Jack and still appoints him leader of the hunters, showing that he tries to keep things fair and that he cares for other characters feelings. When he figures out what has happened and figures out how to call everyone with the conch shell he immediately jumps into action with Piggy. This shows he wants to get things organized and figure out the situation and get it done, presenting his leadership characteristics. Ralph tends to go with the civilized humane instinct in chaotic situations as opposed to Jacks savage response in such situations. For example when things start to get a little to hectic about discussing things in meetings Ralph suggests whoever is holding the conch shell speaks, and only them; showing care for rules and respecting others. Although Ralph being the most level headed boy out of all when it comes to savagery, he unfortunately experiences the lust for barbarism when hunting for the pig. At the end of the novel when rescued by the naval officer he cries because of what he has experienced and been through. Jack Jack, the antagonist, is a young English boy, about the same age as Ralph; although represents the exact opposite of Ralph in the novel. Hes taller then most of the other boys, although described skinny and ugly. His face is freckled and he has orange hair that grows out to long faded fair sandy hair throughout the novel. From the beginning of the novel it seems that Jack has a very big ego and a lot of angry feelings built up inside of him. When he meets Ralph it immediately makes his anger worse because of someone being some sort of high superior then him doesn’t mesh with his military controlling like attitude. Throughout the book Jack constantly disagrees with Ralph and thinks he should have been voted leader. Jack uses the “beastie” to control everyone and starts to drive the group to savagery and slowly lures most of the boys on to his side and organizes to rebel against the current leader, Ralph. Once he has his tribe and turns his tribe against Ralphs group he soaks in the power he has and paints his face and makes the boys on his side as servants if they weren’t hunters. After Jack had lead the boys to the killing of Simon and Piggy, he sends them into a mass frenzy to hunt down Ralph but ironically saves him by setting the island on fire, making ships from afar able to see there was civilization stranded on the island. Jack represents the evil and darkness that can come out within human beings, opposed to Ralphs civilized instincts.

Fourth Quarter

Sypnosis -Simon wakes up and walks through the jungle and towards the mountain to see a dead pilot flapping in the wind stuck in the trees, he realizes it's the “beast” the boys have been seeing. -Simon untangles the parachute and starts out to find the group and tell them what they have been mistaking the beast for all along. -Piggy and Ralph go to Jack's feast in hopes of being civil with everyone and keep control of everything. -Jack asks the remainder of Ralph's followers to join him, most of them agree and leave Ralph's group. -As it starts to rain Ralph questions Jack on how his tribe and himself will keep dry and covered without any shelter, Jack and his tribe just go into another dancing/chanting frenzy. -Ralph and Piggy get caught up in the dancing circles along the beach and they join too. -The boys start to reenact the hunting of the pig and get more excited, they see a shadowy figure in the bushes, they start to attack it and start tearing it apart. -The shadow was Simon, he tries explain and tell them that it's just him but falls and they all jump on him and kill him without any noticing who it was. -Ralph and Piggy feel guilty the next day. Piggy is barley able to bring himself to what he has done and Ralph in hysterics, knows he has taken part in a murder. -Jack starts to manipulate his power more and abuse members of his tribe for no reason. He convinces his tribe that Simon was the monster and that the monster will never truly die, and that they must keep hunting. -Jack and his tribe attack Ralph and the handful of boys they have left in there group. They take there fire and supplies and Piggy's glasses, taking the ability to make fire away from them. -Ralph, Piggy, and the rest of there group go to Castle Rock to try and make Jack and his tribe to see reason. Ralph and Jack immediately get into a fight. Jack orders his tribe to tie up Sam and Eric. Ralph attacks Jack and they get into another fight. -Piggy tries to speak with the conch shell and remind the boys they need to stick together and listen to the rules in order to get rescued; before he can explain Roger pushes a huge rock off the side of the mountain and kills Piggy. -Ralph tries to get Sam and Eric to rejoin his group, they refuse but give him food and tell him what Jack is plotting to do. -Ralph hides in the thicken and falls asleep. In the morning he hears Jack and his tribe planning there attack. They start to try and fight there way through but have a hard time getting to Ralph. Jack's tribe starts a fire to burn through the thicken and Ralph starts to run. -Ralph runs through the forest and falls onto the beach, Ralph looks up to see a Naval officer that had come from a ship that had seen the jungle on fire from far away. The rest of the boys come bursting though the jungle painted and holding weapons. They are all rescued. Characters Piggy – Antagonist, round character, static character, intelligent and nerdy like. Short and fat, more of a follower then a leader. Ralph – Protagonist, round character, static character, leadership like personality. Tries to keep everything equal and fair between everyone. Jack – Antagonist, round character, manipulative, very controlling and evil; tall and skinny red haired boy. Roger – Flat character, kills piggy, black hair, Jack’s “assistant”. Point of View This story is written in third person omniscient point of view. It allows the readers to see everything going on in the story from a narrative point of view, also making it easier to follow the story and which characters are talking and how they feel. Setting This story takes place on an island where a plane has crashed during World War 2. The plane was full of school boys and the pilot died in the crash. They are left to fend for them selves and try and create a mini civilization until rescue. Where the writer made the setting of the story makes it more dangerous and keeps the “on the edge” feeling throughout reading the novel. Notes The book starts out very light atmosphere with the whole tropical scenery and “adult free” feeling to the boys, although throughout the novel it gets more intense and gives a savage/evil feeling. Theme This book reflects a lot on what lengths people will go to for power and leadership and that creating a civilization is competitive, savage and unfair.

3rd Quarter lord of the flies

Sypnosis - The boys separate into two groups after chaos outbursts in meeting - Sam and Eric fall asleep while they are supposed to be watching the signal fire - There’s war going on above the island in the sky and a dead parachutist falls into a tree above near by the signal fire, Sam and Eric wake up and vaguely see the shape in the light of the fire and assume it’s the beast - They run and tell the group what they have seen, and say the beast had “assaulted” them. Immediately the group decide to go on a hunt for the beast - They start on there journey and come across caves and obstacles; the rest of the group other then Ralph and Jack gets distracted and Ralph gets annoyed . - Ralph tells them to stop & reminds them what there doing, the boys are unhappy. - They find pig droppings later that after noon, all the boys agree on while hunting for they beast they should also hunt the pig for food. The boys find it and try to kill it, Ralph slashes the pig and Jack gets cut in the fight but it gets away. - The boys get into a frenzy and reenact what had just happened, they go to far and pretend Robert is a pig and jab him with spears. Boys come to and move on and end up deciding to keep hunting into the night. - Jack Ralph and Roger are set out together for the mountain to find the beast. Roger and Ralph stop near summit and Jack is sent to go first, he runs back down scared and says he saw the monster. Ralph and Roger go to see for themselves a figure flopping in the wind and run for the group. - Jack claims Ralph is a coward and goes off and makes his own tribe. - Jacks tribe kills a pig and sticks its head on a stick and leaves it in a forest clearing. - Piggy and Ralph make a new signal fire on the beach, Jacks tribe comes and steals burning sticks for cooking of pig and invites Ralph’s group. - Simon sees pig head on the stick and “talks” to it and faints afterwards. Characters Piggy- Round and also static character throughout the book, very intelligent and always seems to stick by Ralph’s decisions Robert-Survivor, flat character, gets beaten by accident. Simon- Survivor, static character, mostly flat character, is very nice and well behaved one in the group. Tries to keep peaceful and help. Sam and Eric – Flat characters, survivors and twins Maurice- Survivor, mean and rude like Jack, flat character. Roger- Goes with Jack and Ralph up the mountain to see the beast, flat character, mean and rude like Jack and Maurice Jack- Round character, gets jealous of Ralph’s valued leadership, makes his own tribe, evil, manipulating, static character, tall red hair and scrawny. Ralph- Round character, very nice and tries hard for boys to survive, leadership like personality and qualities. Close with piggy. Point of view This book is written in third person, making it easy to read and see the point of view from all characters and feel the atmosphere and how there feeling about whats happening to them. Third person writing makes it easier to keep on track to whats going on in this book. Setting The setting is on an island where the boys plane has crashed and the pilot has died leaving them with no adults. The island is completely untouched by humans and they are completely vulnerable to all the dangers and things that could happen to them. This story is taking place during WW2. The fact that they think nobody knows that they have crashed gives the whole storey more pressure and stress toward surviving. Notes about writing The author is very realistic and careful/different(?) about his writing in a way and very symbolic with his words. Theme Humanity and civilization being created/maintained and relating to WW2. Showing how barbaric and chaotic fighting for power can get.

2nd quarter lord of the flies

Sypnosis The boys are slowly starting getting used to the fact of nobody coming to save them, giving up hope and getting used to being on the island and being in the warm humid weather. The little ones play during the day and eat fruit, but keep getting more and more scared that the "beastie" is going to come and kill them. They keep reminding everyone that it hunts at night, which is disturbing the littuns sleep. Ralph and Piggy see a ship out on the water but realize that the fire has gone out and Jack and the hunters haven't stuck to there responsibility of keeping the fire going, they're furious and wait for the hunters return. Once they return it's hard for Ralph and Piggy to get a word in, the hunters have caught a pig and are chanting with excitment. Ralph confront Jack aboout the fire but is blocked out from the chanting. Piggy makes a remark about Jack and the hunters' immaturity, Jack slaps him in the face; breaking his glasses. Ralph gets in a heated conversation with Jack. Jack admits that he failed to keep the signal fire going, but never apologizes to piggy. Ralph takes Piggys glasses and starts a fire, Jack resents against Ralph because of this. The night goes on and they roast the pig. Ralph is thinking about how unorganized and out of hand things are getting so he calls a meeting down at the beach. There are disagreesments and taunting from Jack and the hunters and they seperate from the main group and some other boys/littuns follow. Characters Ralph - Round character, static, leader, helps keep everything fair, hardworking Jack - Round character, static, leader of hunters, wants to be chief of entire group, slowly becoming more and more demanding/evil reading through the book. He keeps a realistic feeling throughout the book Theme The main theme I seem to notice is the juggle of power between one another and how barbaric things can get fighting over leadership.

Synopsis

A plane crashes on an Island and a school of boys are stranded with no adults. Two of the characters Ralph and Piggy finds a conch that you can blow air into and it makes a blasting noise. Ralph blows into the conch and tries to attract everyone else stranded on the island. More boys come, including a choir of boys with there choir leader, Jack. They end up agreeing that they need a leader if there's not adults around. They decide on a vote between Ralph and Jack, Ralph wins with most votes and is made chief. Jack seems angry but Ralph tries to make it fair and tells Jack he and his choir can be hunters or an army and Jack can be leader for that. They end up exploring the island and find a mountain and set up camp. Jack and his choir are appointed to go hunt and others are appointed to make shelter, gather things and other duties. Ralph gets annoyed because he thinks Jack and his choir are slacking and not doing what they are supposed to do so they can get out of doing other work.

Setting 

The story takes place on an island where a plane has crashed. It makes the story more interesting/intense because of the young age group thats stranded on an island. The fact that there on a stranded island keeps the constant pressure of survival going in the book at all times, because it's such a dangerous unresourceful place.

Notes

The story starts out very stress and worry free, but as they start meeting more characters and figuring out what had happend throughout the first quarter it gets more intense with competition and survival. The author of the story writes very realistic to how younger kids talk to eachother.

Theme 

The theme of this story is dark and competitive.
Almost relating to how competitive creating a civilization is.
