“Oh the horror... the horror...”

The quote, “Oh the horror... the horror...” (Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness, 1899) relates to the horror that the boys in The Lord of the Flies (William Golding, 1954) experience on the island. In the heart of darkness Kurt says this quote as he's dieing, it is unsure weather he is reflecting upon himself and how he was violent or the British and their violent behaviour. This can relate because near the end of the novel Simon says the boys themselves are the beast that they are so scared of. The island was a natural paradise before they showed up. They were the ones to scorch it, shed blood, and kill the animals.

Three Pole Parachute Tent

1. First you need three sticks, tie them together at one end.
2. Take the sticks and set them up with the tied end at the top, like a tripod.
3. If you want the shelter to be stronger take more sticks, about 5 or 6, and lay them against the stick tripod you have set up. Do not tie them to it though.
4. Find out what direction the wind blows in. Once you find out make the entrance at least 90 degrees away from the wind direction
5. Take the parachute and put it on the back of the shelter. The nylon loop should be at the top of the shelter.
6. Place the loop on a free standing stick, then put a stick against it so it's the same height.
7. Wrap one side of the sticks with the parachute. The parachute should be folded in half because you'll be using the whole thing.
8. To make the entrance, wrap the folded sides of the parachute around two sticks. To close it, just move them together
9. If you have an extra parachute, put it underneath the sticks so you have a floor
10. If you want to have a fire inside, leave a 30 to 50 centimetre whole in the top. This whole is for the purpose of ventilation.

This information would have been very valuable for the boys in The Lord of the Flies to know. If they had known this from the beginning they would have had a way easier  time making shelter. If they had an easier time making shelters, that might have changed the story. It could've changed the story because Ralph wouldn't have gotten so mad about people not helping so jack would dislike him less. Also, other people might have been able to tend to the fire because no one would need to focus on the shelters so Ralph wouldn't have yelled at Jack for hunting instead of tending to the fire.

- While at the feast the beast comes and the tribe kills it
- It's not the beast it's simon
- at night Jack, Roger, and Maurice steal Piggy's glasses
- Ralph, sam, eric, and piggy go to jacks tribe to confront them about stealing the glasses
- Jack takes Sam and Eric captive
- Roger pushes a boulder onto Piggy and kills him
- Jack's tribe is now after and hunting Ralph
- A naval officer comes to shore mid chase and says he's there to rescue them

Character Sketches

Ralph

He is a fair haired boy. His hair is brown. He is short and muscular. Ralph is twelve years old. When he crashes he is wearing a shirt, pants, stockings, and a sweater. Ralph takes off his stockings and sweater and as the book progresses his clothing gets more torn and rattier.

Ralph is a natural born leader. He is charismatic and can gain the trust of the boys quite easy. He knows what needs to be done in order for them to survive and possibly get rescued. He has a rivalry with another boy named Jack who is a lot like Ralph but not as charismatic. He is not the only brains behind the operation so he doesn't think of the little things or how to get to the big things that he wants. He is the protagonist.

Piggy

Piggy is a short boy. He is quite plump and he got the name piggy from his home because of his weight and he told Ralph about it as long as he promised not to tell anybody. Even though Ralph promised not to tell anybody his nickname, not too much later in the book he told people the nickname. In the book you don't find out piggy's real name.

Piggy is more of the brains behind the operation. He thinks out the details. Piggy is not charismatic in the least bit. Nobody takes piggy seriously so nobody listens to him. Everybody is rude to him and they never care about what he has to say. When he has an idea most of the time he tells it to Ralph because he is the more charismatic of the two. His role is the thinker.

1^st Quarter

Synopsis

The first quarter of The Lord of the Flies starts of with two kids on a beach. A plane crashed and they don't know if anyone else has survived, they introduce themselves. The kids are Ralph and Piggy. Ralph finds a conch and starts blowing on it. Eventually, children come from the woods and join them on the beach, There are only children and no adults. They have a meeting and Ralph is made the leader, They go exploring and find a mountain. They soon make a fire and start making duties to hunt and make shelter. Only two people are working on the shelters and the hunters haven't caught any meat so Ralph accuses them of using it as an excuse to get out of work so tension starts to build.
